New SSP Rebate Facility

A new online service will be launched on 26 May for small and medium-sized employers to recover coronavirus-related Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) payments they have made to their employees, the government announced yesterday (19 May 2020). The Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme was announced in the Budget as part of a package of support measures for businesses affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

This scheme will allow small and medium-sized employers, with fewer than 250 employees, to apply to HMRC to recover the costs of paying coronavirus-related SSP.

The repayment will cover up to 2 weeks of SSP and is payable if an employee is unable to work because they:

  1. have coronavirus; or

  2. are self-isolating and unable to work from home; or

  3. are shielding because they’ve been advised that they’re at high risk of severe illness from coronavirus.

Employers will be able to make their claims through a new online service from 26 May. This means they will receive repayments at the relevant rate of SSP that they have paid to current or former employees for eligible periods of sickness starting on or after 13 March 2020.

This is one of the first measures that was introduced by the government to assist employers who were struggling with the cost of absence relating to self-isolation as a result of the coronavirus.

Since this time we have seen a whole host of measures introduced by the government to support businesses, employees and the self employed, which, although there will be changes post lockdown, has no doubt softened the impact of the pandemic across the country.

We at Nucleushr appreciate that this is a worrying time for all businesses, if you have any questions or need any support regarding furlough, lockdown easing or life after lockdown, please do not hesitate to contact Toni on 07960 418494 or toni@nucleushr.com
